Who We Are
TORONTO METROPOLITAN AERO DESIGN is a student run team that designs and manufactures remote-controlled aircraft for the SAE Aero, a Design Series competition.
For over 36 years, TMAD has given students of various academic backgrounds an opportunity to apply what they have learned in class to real life.
Collectively, our achievements in competition include placing 1st in practical flight, 1st in presentation, and being the top Canadian team overall.
The aircrafts built for this competition are reflection of the collaborative efforts of all members. Amid the year-long process, this team becomes an exercise in networking and mentoring.

THE COMPETITION
The competition is developed by industry professionals with a focus on educational value and hands-on experience. These rules were designed to compress a typical aircraft development program into one calendar year, following the early development phase of system engineering and requirements derivation. This competition will expose participants to the nuances of conceptual design, manufacturing, system integration/test, and verification through demonstration.
SAE Aero Design features three classes of competition—Regular, Advanced, and Micro.
1. The Regular Class is an all-electric class intended to develop a fundamental understanding of aircraft design.
2. The Advanced Class is an all-electric class designed to inspire future engineers to take a systems approach to problem solving, at the same time, exposing them to explore the possibilities of autonomous flights.
3. The Micro Class is an all-electric class designed to challenge students to design a small electric aircraft that has various conflicting design requirements: short take off, speed, external payload carriage, internal payload carriage and a time limit on unloading the payloads.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
SAE International's Collegiate Design Series (CDS) programs prepare undergraduate and graduate engineering students in a variety of disciplines for future employment in mobility-related industries by challenging them with a real world, engineering application.
Through the Engineering Design Process, experiences may include but not limited to:
• Project management, budgeting, communication, and resource management skills
• Team collaboration
• Applying industry rules and regulations
• Design, build, and test the performance of a real vehicle
• Compete with other students from around the globe
• Develop and prepare technical documentation
Students also gain valuable exposure to and engagement with industry professionals to enhance 21st century learning skills, to build their own network and help prepare them for the workforce after graduation.
